Data Center Monitoring Interface

Data Center Monitoring

Overview:
Eta Vision is both a hardware and software company specializing in environmental monitoring solutions for data centers. The hardware team developed a device using a wireless-mesh network to monitor key environmental factors such as humidity, temperature, and location. These small, magnetically-attached devices provided real-time, dynamic readings across data racks throughout the center.

Design Challenge:
To make the vast amounts of data from these devices accessible and actionable, I was tasked with designing a user interface that catered to diverse user types: data scientists, decision-makers, managers, operators, and more. The interface needed to be both intuitive and robust to meet the varying needs of these users.

Collaboration & Research:
Working closely with the CTO, Head of Engineering, and existing users, I gathered insights on the technical requirements and user needs. This collaboration allowed me to identify key pain points and opportunities to design an interface that balanced both functionality and usability.

Deliverables:
I designed an interface that enabled users to:

  • Visualize the exact locations of servers with a bird’s-eye view of the data center.

  • Interact with devices via micro-interactions, displaying real-time summaries and insights.

  • Perform deep searches for detailed data when required.

  • Receive proactive guidance on actionable next steps, such as adjusting airflow based on temperature alerts.

Outcome & Impact:
The goal was to create an interface that not only informed users but empowered them to act proactively. For example, in case of overheating, users were notified, enabling them to address the issue before it escalated. The system would then confirm the resolution, updating the user with live readings.

Over the course of four years, this application grew significantly, with iterative improvements driven by user feedback and evolving data center needs.
